How to Play Codebreaker
You must guess a secret sequence of 4 colored pegs. An empty row awaits your first guess.
How to Play Codebreaker (Mastermind)
Codebreaker (often known as Mastermind) is a brilliant game of logic, deduction, and cryptography.
Basic Rules
- The Objective: A secret sequence of colored pegs (or numbers) is hidden at the top of the board. You must guess the exact sequence and the exact order within a limited number of tries.
- Making a Guess: Fill the current row with your guess and hit submit.
- Reading the Clues (Crucial!): After each guess, the game gives you feedback using small indicator pegs:
- 🟢 Green Peg: One of your guesses is the correct color AND in the correct exact position.
- 🟡 Yellow Peg: One of your guesses is the correct color, but in the WRONG position.
- ⚫ Grey/Empty: A color you guessed is not in the secret code at all.
Winning Strategy
- First Guess: Always start with a diverse guess (e.g., all 4 different colors) to test as many variables as possible.
- The Process of Elimination: If a guess yields zero Green or Yellow pegs, celebrate! You now know those colors are completely safe to ignore in all future guesses.
- Locking in Greens: Once you suspect a color is in the correct position (Green), keep it there in your next guess and only change the others.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Do the clue pegs correspond to the exact position of my guess? A: NO! This is the most common beginner mistake. The feedback pegs (Green/Yellow) are simply provided as a total count. They do not line up with the specific positions of your guessed colors. You have to use logic to figure out which ones are correct.
