How to Play Lights Out

Welcome to the definitive guide on Lights Out! This classic electronic logic puzzle is deceptively simple to learn but notoriously difficult to master. Your ultimate goal is to turn off all the lights on the grid.

Basic Rules

1. The Grid: The game is played on a grid (commonly 5x5) where each cell is a "light" that can be either ON (bright) or OFF (dark).
2. The Toggle Mechanic: When you click or tap on any light, it will toggle its state (from ON to OFF, or OFF to ON).
3. The Ripple Effect: Here is the catch! Clicking a light will ALSO toggle the state of the four adjacent lights directly above, below, left, and right of it.

Blindly clicking around in Lights Out will usually just scramble the board further. To reliably solve it, you need to use a systematic approach. The most famous and effective method for human players is "Chase the Lights".

• Step 1: Chase the Lights Downward. Start from the second row. Look at the row immediately above it (Row 1). For every light that is currently ON in Row 1, click the light directly below it in Row 2. This will turn off the light in Row 1, but it will mess up Row 2 and Row 3.
• Step 2: Repeat the Process. Now move to Row 3. For every light still ON in Row 2, click the light directly below it in Row 3. Continue this process of "chasing the lights downward" until you reach the very bottom row.
• Step 3: The Bottom Row Magic. By following Step 1 and 2, Rows 1 to 4 will be completely dark, and all remaining ON lights will be trapped in the very bottom row (Row 5). In a standard 5x5 game, the specific pattern of lights left in the bottom row corresponds to a specific sequence of clicks you must perform on the top row to reset the puzzle for a flawless final run.
  • If the bottom row is 0-0-1-1-1, click top row 4.
  • If the bottom row is 0-1-0-1-0, click top row 1, 4.
  • If the bottom row is 0-1-1-0-1, click top row 1.
  • If the bottom row is 1-0-0-1-0, click top row 5.
  • If the bottom row is 1-0-1-1-0, click top row 3.
